Puppy Training

Six week course

Introduction

Your puppy may attend our puppy training classes as soon as it has finished its course of injections. In addition to the formal training, the classes are an ideal opportunity for your puppy to develop social skills with other puppies as well as for you to meet like minded people.

If you have re-homed a dog, either this or the basic class will be suitable; please contact us ideally via email: bookings@newburydogtraining.org.uk so we can advise you.

Handlers of any age are welcome but ideally puppies need to be 6 months or under.

Course Details

The puppy training course runs once a week on a Tuesday evening over a course of six weeks. It covers the basic commands:

  • Sit
  • Down
  • Stand
  • Sit Stay (owner walks away)
  • Down Stay
  • Stand Stay
  • Heel work (including weave)
  • Leave
  • Recall (dog returns to you)
  • Finish (dog sits next to you)

The course is taken by an experienced handler and trainer with assistants on hand as well to provide one to one help.

Where, When and How Much?

Classes are held on Tuesday evenings (except during August and December when we are closed) in Hermitage Village Hall. Sessions last about 40 minutes. It is recommended that you arrive 10 minutes early to give your dog a chance to settle and socialise with the other puppies. There is also a playing field behind the Hall to let the dogs run off a little steam before the class.

It costs £60.00 for the 6 week course and this also gives your full membership to the Club for the remainder of the year so once you have finished your puppy training you are welcome to return to the Basics class. Due to limited numbers, our puppy classes often sold out before the course starts. You should book and pay for them in advance. All bookings and payments should be made online for Puppy courses. Please check the calendar to view the start dates of each 6 week course.

We would be grateful if you could read the following notes prior to attending the first session to ensure your puppy or dog gets the most out of the course.

What to Bring

For each class, we recommend that you bring along:

  • Your puppy wearing a collar
  • A lead (preferably leather but definitely not chain or extendable please)
  • A bag of small treats ideally in a bum bag that is easily accessible
  • A favourite toy
  • Dog poop bags
  • We also suggest that you wear trousers and comfortable shoes.

Restrictions

For the safety of your puppy and others, we require the full course of vaccinations to be completed prior to attending. Additionally, we cannot allow bitches in season.
